Video & Audio

Camera Resolution  The video quality of the camera in the doorbell is 960P HD. This will provide you with a great quality of picture.

Viewing Angle Not only does the camera offer HD quality pictures but the horizontal viewing angle is 120°. This is great news for you because it means that a very large area around your front door can be carefully monitored!

Night Vision At night the clarity is just as crisp using August’s low light technology.

Regardless of what time of day or night it is, you will be certain of getting a very clear picture of exactly what is happening outside of your front door.

Motion Detection is a  recently added feature.  This uses a Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR) to detect heat changes in it’s field of view.

You will be sent a notification as soon as your doorbell detects any motion near your front door before your doorbell is rung.

The motion detector has different levels of sensitivity so that it can be adjusted to suit your individual circumstances. The levels can be adjusted via the app on your smartphone or your tablet

Motion detectionis a very important feature for people who are looking to buy more than just a doorbell. It will enhance your sense of security and well being.

Live feed is another popular feature with users.  It is a separate feature to motion detection and means that at any given moment you can view the live video feed of the doorbell cam.

I think that this feature is helpful in 3 ways. If you away from home and you just to to make quick, random checks on your home. If you have had a report that suspicious looking people have been spotted in your neighborhood or even if you just need a little distraction and light relief whilst at work!

And finally in this section, the Ring doorbell features 2 way audio, so that your visitor can talk to you and you can talk to them. You can make an important guest feel welcome before you even open the front door!

iOS App  The Doorbell Cam can be operated via an app for your iPhone.  It works with the iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6+. These devices need to be running iOS 8 or iOS 9. Unfortunately, the app does not work on iPads.

Android App The Doorbell Cam can be operated via an app for some Android phones, including the Samsung Galaxy range of phones and the Nexus range of phones. A more complete list can be found here.

[expand title=”Read More” tag=”font color= blue”]

Importantly, these Android phones must be equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 (which is a recent and low energy version of Bluetooth) and be running either Android 4.4 (KitKat), 5 (Lollipop) or 6 (Marshmellow.)

The App does not run on Android Tablets, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tabs.

Windows 10 Unfortunately the Doorbell Cam cannot be accessed by any Windows device- phone, tablet or laptop.

Mac Unfortunately, the Doorbell Cam cannot be accessed from your Mac laptop or desktop.

Connection & Power & Storage

Wi-Fi This doorbell will connect to your smartphone your Wi-Fi. It will connect to routers running on 2.4Ghz but not those that are running on 5 Ghz. It supports the WPA, WPA2 and WEP encryption.

Basically, nearly everyone who has Internet at home should be able to set up and use a Doorbell Cam quickly and safely. Detailed instructions on installation can be found here.

[expand title=”Read More” tag=”font color= blue”]

It is important to check the speed of your Internet (and the strength of the signal) by your front door to make sure that it is fast enough to make the device work properly.

A good Wi-Fi signal and speed will make the doorbell work better in two ways. Firstly, there will be less delay between an “event” happening (such motion detection or someone ringing the doorbell) and you being notified of it. Secondly, when you are watching video from your doorbell, it will much less likely to freeze or pixelate.

Power The Doorbell Cam needs to be connected to wires that provide between 16V- 24V of power. In other words, you need to either uninstall your existing electric doorbell and connect this device up to those wires, or have a new set of wires installed.

Yes, this installation takes longer than installing a battery operated doorbell but once you have it installed, it gives your Doorbell Cam a couple of advantages. Your doorbell will never need to have it’s battery re-charged and  it allows you to view a live feed of what is happening outside of your front door now.

Cloud Storage Cloud storage is the means to store the captured videos and photos from your doorbell. The device captures videos and photos when the motion detector has been triggered and when the doorbell has been pressed.

Not only are these images stored but they are then available to download and to share. There is a very serious benefit of this storing and sharing capability because if a crime has been commited, any images can be shared with yoour local police.

On a much less serious level, this means that if the Doorbell Cam records any funny moments, these too can be shared with your friends and family and make everyone laugh!

Doorbell Cam’s cloud storage is free for the first 6 months, if you activate your device by 31st December 2016.

Cat 5/ LAN The doorbell cannot be connected to your Internet at home by a cat 5 cable or wire.

Bluetooth This device does not use Bluetooth.

Design & Warranty

Colors The Doorbell Cam comes in 4 colors; gold, silver, black and red. This means that there is enough choice for you to choose the perfect colour for your front door.

Weatherproof  This device can  operate effectively in temperatures ranging from -13 °F- 122 °F (-25 °C to 50 °C) and in humidity levels from 0%- 95%- which I guess shows that it is rain proof!

The doorbell cam has been designed to keep working in all weathers.

SmartLock Compatibility

This device was designed and made to be compatible with another of the manufacturer’s products, the August Smart Lock. However, because of this, it is not compatible with any other types of electrical lock.

The combination of a video doorbell linked to an electrical lock is pretty awesome because then you can answer your doorbell remotely as well opening your front door without having to be at home- or if you are at home you don’t need to get up out of your chair!

This device comes with a 12 month warranty. Other video doorbell companies offer free replacements for devices that are stolen.
