Welcome to my August smart lock review!
When the August Smart Lock first arrived on the scene in late 2014, it caused quite a stir with it’s sleek good looks. Then in late 2015, the lock was upgraded once more to make sure that the technology was still “cutting edge.”
August is a company that is developing other “smart devices” (such as its video doorbell) and software as it looks to grow in the “home automation” market.Read More
A huge strength of its products are that they are compatible with the Apple Home Kit- which is a piece of “home automation” software that Apple hope will become as big a hit as most of its other software.
One of the strongest features of this lock is that it only replaces the interior body of your lock on your door. The exterior body of your lock remains as is- which for many of us with traditional locks means that we get to keep our “front door key” and use it as a back up.
My reviews are packed full of information which I want you to be able to read quickly and easily.
Therefore I have used lots of tables and other shortcuts to help you make the right decision as quickly as possible.
At- a- Glance Features
Below, I have created tables which show the different features that this device has. I have divided the features up into different tables to make it easier for you to read.
Those tables are;
(1) Basic Specifications (2) Methods of Opening (3) Software & Apps (4) Home Automation
(5) Security & Lock (6) Design and (7) Installation
The first table is visible. To view the other six tables click on the black down arrow on the left hand side of the heading.
Methods of Opening
The August Lock can be opened using a keypad which needs to be purchased separately.
This lock can be opened by your smartphone. There are free apps available for either your iPhone or your Android phone (more details below) which allow your phone to connect to your lock via Bluetooth.
This means that your phone or your hand doesn’t need to touch the lock for it to open.
Unlike other smart locks, that replace the interior and external fittings of the deadbolt, the August lock only replaces the interior side of your deadbolts. Your exterior fitting remains the same, which for most people will include a key.
Software & Apps
There is an iOS app for this lock. It requires your iPhone to be running iOS 8 or later, which is compatible with the iPhone 5 and upwards.
The Android app will only run on version 4.4.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich). There are a limited number of phones that it runs on. These include the Samsung Galaxy S range and Nexus phones.
One of the real strengths of this lock is the number of home automation systems that it connects with. August themselves have an app that allows different smart devices to connect and be controlled together.
This lock will also connect with the Nest system and Honeywell’s Total Connect system.
Apple Home Kit
And the August lock will also work with the Apple Home Kit, which is Apple’s home automation software.
Integrating with Apple’s Home Kit will enable you to use your voice to control the August lock which is very exciting!
