You have looked at a range of great outdoor security cameras. Check.

You have narrowed down your options to only include those cameras that are battery operated. Check.

And now you just need to find the security camera that is easy to install.

Well, this could be your lucky day…

In this article, I explain the key features of an easy to install wireless outdoor security camera and I review five of the best products.

What do I mean by easy to install? Well after a lot of head scratching and research, I think that a security camera that is easy to install has six essential features.

  • Power

Perhaps the first feature that you need to consider as you search for a security camera that is easy to install, is to think about how it is powered.

Battery powered cameras tend to be the easiest cameras to install because you don’t need to think about electrical sockets- about the need to install a socket or whether an existing socket is on the right place.

But, knowing that your favorite camera is battery powered is not enough. You need to know what type of battery it uses and how that battery is recharged.

For instance, if the camera has a built in lithium ion battery that cannot be removed, how will you recharge it.

And if the battery can be removed for recharging, you need to think about whether you should buy a spare battery so that the camera has no “down time.”

  • Solar Panel

If you have decided that having an outside electrical socket installed is too expensive and complicated but that you are worried about whether a battery powered security camera will be reliable enough, perhaps you should consider buying a camera that can be powered by a solar panel.

Although you will need to buy a solar panel separately, they are much easier and cheaper to install than an electrical socket.

  • Mounting Options

The third feature to consider is the mounting options of these outdoor security cameras.

A great security camera will come with everything you need to mount the camera- except the drill itself.

And so, not only will the package include a mounting bracket but it will also include the wall anchors that you need to place into the wall.

To make things even easier, some of these easy to install security cameras will have a magnetic mount to make the whole process much quicker.

And yet another consideration is whether a security camera has different mounts to choose from.

These will be made by third parties and will need to be purchased separately but having a choice of different mounts is incredibly helpful because users want to use and position their security cameras in many different ways.

  • Installation Videos/ Guides

The next feature that any easy to install wireless outdoor security camera needs is an excellent installation guide or in this day and age, a set of how-to videos.

Ideally, these videos will take the user step by step through how to connect the device to your home network via the app and how to install the mounting bracket securely.

The easiest solution is that these videos can be viewed via the app so that you are not forced to switch between too many apps as you are trying to get your camera set up.

  • Wi-Fi Connection

Of course all the cameras in my comparison use Wi-Fi as a means of connecting to the Internet, but what you need from a security camera that is easy to install, is that the connection between the camera and the Internet is stable and strong.

And so, just how do the cameras in my selection stack up?

  • Weatherproof?

Our final feature of an outside security camera that is easy to install is to make sure that the camera is weatherproof and that you don’t need to buy an extra “skin” or mount it in an outside area that isn’t totally exposed to “the elements”.

Make sure that the camera has an IP (ingress protection) rating of at least IP65 or that it has an operating temperature range which is perfectly suited to your location.

Now that I have described the “hottest” features that you need to look out for in an easy to install wireless outdoor security camera, it is time to take a look at some of the hottest products.
